Image-guided radiation therapy is a procedure that uses imaging during radiation therapy, thereby increasing treatment accuracy and precision. Most often, parts of the body that moves, such as the lungs, neck are treated with IGRT. With the advanced technology of 3D imagining, which the radiation therapy machines are equipped with, doctors can now image the tumor before treatment begins. Besides, by comparing the reference images taken during the simulation process, the radiation beams can be precisely targeted towards the tumor for effective treatment. In addition, some of the IGRT procedure uses 3-D body surface mapping, MRI, fiducial markers, colored ink tattoos on the skin to improve the treatment.
